Arms case: Papia, husband indicted

A Dhaka court on Sunday framed charges against Jubo Mohila League-Narsingdi unit’s expelled leader Shamima Nur Papia and her husband Mofizur Rahman in an arms case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Kayes framed the charges against the couple and ordered to begin formal trial proceedings against them on Sunday.

The court also fixed August 31 and September 1, 2, 3 for deposition against the accused.

Earlier in the day, the accused pleaded not guilty but the court rejected their acquittal plea and bail petition submitted by their lawyer.

On June 29, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-1 Sub-Inspector (SI) Mohammad Arifuzzaman, also the investigating officer (IO) of the arms case, submitted the charge sheet against them before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka.

On February 22, RAB arrested Papia and her husband, along with two of her accomplices, while they were leaving the country from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

Later three cases were filed -- two with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station under arms and special powers acts, and one with Airport police station under special powers act.
