A Dhaka tribunal has started trial proceedings against Jubo Mohila League-Narsingdi unit’s expelled leader Shamima Nur Papia and her husband Mofizur Rahman on Monday, in an arms case, with deposition of a prosecution witness.

Special Tribunal-1 Judge KM Emrul Kayesh has recorded the statement of Sub-Inspector Md Saiful Islam of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-1.

The tribunal also fixed September 1 for deposition against the accused.

On 23 August, a Dhaka court framed charges against Papia and her husband in the case.

RAB-1 Sub-Inspector (SI) Mohammad Arifuzzaman, also the investigating officer (IO) of the case, submitted the charge-sheet against the couple before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka on June 29.

Earlier, RAB arrested Papia and her husband, along with two of her accomplices, while they attempted to leave the country from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on February 22.

Later, three cases were filed -- two with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station under Arms and Special Powers acts, and one with Airport police station under Special Powers Act.
