Garment workers of a factory in Ashulia on Saturday demonstrated protesting at the sacking of 709 workers without any prior notice.

They said 1,020 people used to work at the ‘Sigma Fashions Limited’ – a concern of Sigma Group – in Tajpur area of Norshingpur.

Amid the situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the authorities initially kept the factory shut till April 5, said the workers, adding the deadline was later extended till May 1.

Meanwhile, the authorities sacked 709 workers without any prior notice and hung a notice in front of the factory, they said.

On information, workers gathered there in the morning and demonstrated against what they call unlawful move.

Fahima, who used to work as a sewing operator, said the factory authorities paid the salary on April 16.

On that day, they asked each worker to sign on multiple documents, she said, adding that it was now clear to her why the signatures were collected.

Contacted, the factory’s Managing Director Mizanur Rahman said, “Whatever we have done is written on the notice hung outside the factory.”

Asked why they have sacked workers when the factory is already kept shut until May 1, he hung up.

Additional police forces have been deployed in the area to avoid any untoward situation.
