Asif A Chowdhury, consul for Chile in Bangladesh and managing director of Chowdhury Group, has been elected vice-president of the World Federation of Consuls (FICAC)-Board of Directors for the next three years (2022-2025).
Asif is the first-ever vice-president elected from the Asia region in the FICAC. He has been elected unanimously by the 90 members of the federation.
The voting took place at the 13th World Congress of Consuls organised in Limassol, Cyprus on Monday, according to a press release.
Asif, also the former president and founder secretary general of the Consular Corps in Bangladesh (CCB), held the post of director of FICAC since 2015.
He is the former president of the Japan-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JBCCI).
FICAC is a global network of consular associations created to support and improve the status, legitimacy and effectiveness of all consular officers in all receiving states.
FICAC was founded in Copenhagen on October 2, 1982, by a small group of visionaries led by Consul General Vagn Jespersen of Denmark.
Nikolaos Margaropoulos, consul general of the Philippines in Greece, has been elected FICAC president unanimously, and P Bhaggeria, consul of Moldova in India, has been elected secretary general.
