At least 41 people were killed during violence in the Bangladeshi capital as protesters stormed buildings after the prime minister was ousted on Monday, a police officer.
"We've got 41 bodies here," said Bacchu Mia, a police inspector at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, without giving details of their deaths, although witnesses and other police officers reported mobs launching revenge attacks on rival groups.
Most of the deceased are from Dhaka’s Jatrabari area, he said, adding that at least 275 people also got injured. Most of the injuries suffered are bullet wounds.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal's Dhanmondi residence was set on fire by an angry mob. At the same time, the fire service received reports of arson in hundreds of places across the country, including multiple police stations and Awami League offices.
Fire Service and Civil Defenses headquarters Control Room Duty Officer Rozina Akhter said, “We received reports of fire from many places across Dhaka. Among them, there are fire incidents in the home minister Dhanmondi's residence, Adabor Police Station, Khilkhet Police Station, Postgola, Uttara, Mirpur, Tejgaon.
“There were also reports of arson in many places across the country. We have been very busy. More details will be available at a later time.”
