Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) claims to have arrested the main accused early Saturday in a case filed over carrying out an attack on Hindu houses in Shalla upazila of Sunamganj.
Muhammad Khaled Uz Zaman, superintendent of police (SP) at PBI, Sylhet, confirmed the matter to the media.
The main accused Shahidul Islam alias Swadhin Member was arrested from Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar around 1:30am, said the SP.
The arrestee is a member of Tarol Union Parishad in Derai Upazila of Sunamganj.
Hefajat-e-Islam followers on Wednesday vandalised several houses of Hindu community in Noagaon village of Sunamganj’s Shalla upazila as a Hindu youth had allegedly criticised the party's Joint Secretary General Maulana Mamunul Haque on social media.
Young Hindu man Jhumon from Noagaon village made a Facebook post on Tuesday night. As the post went viral, police detained him with the help of locals on the same night.
Two separate cases were filed over the incident with Shalla police station.
A total of 1,500 people were made accused in one of the cases. Of them, 50 were named.
