Violent attacks and wanton destruction – carried out under the guise of quota reform movement – had been planned to weaken the police, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner, also Detective Branch (DB) Chief Harun-or-Rashid.

Addressing a press conference at his office on Friday after the arrest of six people in connection with the killing of two policemen, Harun said, “BNP-Jamaat had tried many times to oust democratic governments illegally or make the country ineffective.

“But because of the police, they have repeatedly failed. This is why they have targeted the police. During the quota reform movement, students were used as shields to target the state institutions and police. They went to Jatrabari Shanir Akhra, Rayerbag area and targeted the police. They also announced a Tk 10,000 bounty for killing police personnel.”

Earlier in the day, the DB Cyber and Special Crime (South) Division arrested six people including Chhatra Dal leaders in connection with the murder of two policemen in Jatrabari’s Rayerbag and Shanir Akhra areas.

The arrestees are – mastermind and Demra Thana Chhatra Dal convener Masud Rana, Irfan, Abu Bakkar, Rabiul Islam, Sawrabh Mia and Tarek.

Citing that the suspects were arrested on the basis of concrete evidence after analysing video footage, the DB chief said, “A group of 25 to 30 people, including Rabiul Islam, Saurabh Mia and Tarek, led by the convener Masud Rana, stayed at Rayerbag in Jatrabari on July 19 to participate in the quota reform movement.

“With the presence and active participation and cooperation of Masud Rana, Irfan and Bakkar joined him with several other teams.”

He continued, “Under the leadership of Masud Rana, they played an active role in arson in Rayerbag-Shanir Akhra areas, spread rumors on mosque mikes, attacked police stations, and killed policemen.

“Legal action is being taken against those who led the violence and exchanged funds for this purpose. No matter where they live, no culprits will be spared.”
