Automobile manufacturers and assemblers on Wednesday urged the government to aid this sector with adequate policy support.

They made the call at the first meeting of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industry Standing Committee on Automobile Manufacturers and Assemblers held in the capital’s FBCCI Icon building.

The entrepreneurs said Bangladesh has immense potential in the automobile sector, but due to a lack of policy support on designing two, three and four wheelers, these vehicles cannot be manufactured locally.

Almost 99 per cent of these vehicles are produced by foreign vendors, they added.

Speaking as the chief guest, FBCCI president Md Jashim Uddin said, “Bangladesh is now gradually lessening its dependency on imports, while strengthening the local manufacturing capacity.

“This enables the country to expand its export base in addition to meeting domestic demand. Proper branding of this capacity would have increased a lot more investment and employment as well.”

Director in Charge of the Committee Md Habib Ullah Dawn called for ensuring a competitive market of quality products along with solving the problems related to policies regarding the automobile industry.

“In future, the FBCCI would organise seminars inviting the representatives from concerned ministries,” he added.

Chairing the meeting, the Standing Committee Chairman Hafizur Rahman Khan urged the business community to work on sector-wise development and prepare a draft on various issues to be submitted to the government through the FBCCI.

“The FBCCI has already started working with the government regarding vendor policy,” added Hafizur, also the chairman of Runner Group.”
