An unidentified auto-rickshaw driver went missing after he jumped off the Padma Bridge during a chase by security guards at the Mawa end of the bridge in Munshiganj district early Monday.
He jumped into the Padma River from the bridge near pillar No.21 around 1:50 am.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Padma Uttar Police Station Alamgir Hossain said the security guards chased the driver of the battery-run auto-rickshaw when he was running the vehicle on the bridge despite ban on plying such vehicles on it.
Noticing the security guards, the driver tried to flee with the vehicle and fell down on the bridge hitting a stationary pickup van, he said.
The auto-rickshaw driver jumped into the river when the security guards reach near him. .
A diver team from Dhaka arrived here on Monday morning and is conducting a rescue operation along with personnel from fire service, river police and coast guards, the OC added.
