Nepalese authorities have handed over Siam Hossain – one of the suspects of Jhenaidah-4 constituency lawmaker Md Anwarul Azim Anar murder – to the Kolkata Police.

Confirming the matter on Friday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman told reporters, “The CID has started questioning Siam after Nepal Police handed him over to Kolkata police.

“Besides, Kolkata Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested two more individuals on suspicion of their involvement in Azim’s murder.”

According to the police, Akhtaruzzaman Shahin – who reportedly masterminded the killing – had left for the United States via Kathmandu, and even though he lives in Jhenaidah, he has US citizenship.

DMP Commissioner said, “Siam, who is the accomplice of Shahin, had hid himself in Kathmandu after the murder. After receiving a tip off, an official letter was issued to the Nepal Police through the police headquarters’ NCB branch.

“Kathmandu police arrested Siam based on intelligence from Dhaka.”

About the trial process of Azim’s murder, Habibur said, “India is investigating this murder and our police are also investigating. The two countries will decide on the probe and its following steps.

“An investigation will be undertaken at the crime scene. However, according to Bangladeshi law, if a Bangladeshi commits crime overseas, the criminal can be extradited to Bangladesh and tried.”

Md Anwarul Azim Anar went to Kolkata on May 11 for medical treatment, and then went missing from May 14.

On May 22, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said the lawmaker was brutally killed at a flat in New Town, near Kolkata. A case was filed on the same day.

A Dhaka court recently granted an 8-day remand to three accused arrested in connection with the murder.
