The Bangladesh Association of Construction Industry (BACI) has urged the government to reduce the tax and VAT imposed on construction materials, at least by 2 per cent.

They also requested the government to exempt the import duty on construction raw material temporarily to keep the sector stable.

The requests were made during a press conference organized by BACI at Dhaka Reporter's Unity conference room on Wednesday.

In the conference, BACI former president SK Md Rafiqul Islam said, “The price of per tonne of rod increased by 61 per cent from Tk57,000 to Tk 92,000 while price of per bag cement increased by 22 per cent from Tk390 to Tk475 in the second week of March compared to that of last year.”

“Recently, prices of all constructing material saw a huge rise which is affecting our sector greatly. We request the government to adjust the prices for the sake of our sector,” he added.
