Banani rape: Safat's bail cancelled, sent to jail

A Dhaka Court has cancelled bail of Safat Ahmed, son of Apan Jewellers owner Dildar Ahmed, and sent him to jail in a case filed over raping two students at the Raintree Hotel in the capital's Banani area.

The court also fixed October 12 for delivering the verdict in the case, which accuses four other people.

Dhaka’s 7th Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Begum Kamrunnahar, set the date for the verdict on Sunday after hearing arguments from both sides in the court.

Confirming the matter to The Business Post, the plaintiff's lawyer Faruk Ahmed said, “The court on the day cancelled the bail of all the accused and ordered to send them to jail.”

On June 7, 2017, the investigating officer of the case filed a charge-sheet against the five.

Later, the tribunal accepted the charge-sheet against the accused on June 19 that year.

According to the case statement, the two victims went to the Raintree hotel in Banani on Mar 28, 2017 after being invited to a birthday party.

After the rooftop party ended, around midnight, two of the five accused in the case raped the girls in two hotel rooms.

Of the five accused, Shafat Ahmed and Nayem Ashraf were indicted for rape, while three others -- Shadman Sakif, Shafat’s driver Billal Hossain, and bodyguard Rahmat Ali---were charged with assisting in the rape.
