Bangladesh Medical Research Counci( BMRC) has approved the phase 3 trial of a Covid-19 vaccine developed by Chinese firm Sinovac.
The vaccine would be applied to 2100 people in Bangladesh.
Internationally reputed research organisation ICDDR,B will conduct the trial in the country. The director of BMRC Dr Mahmud Uz Zaman confirmed the news to The Business Post.
‘We’ve permitted the trial of Sinovac-developed Covid-19 vaccine here,’ Dr Mahmud said. ICDDR,B has partnered with the Sinovac, he added.
The phase 3 clinical trial to test the efficacy and safety of the vaccine was already approved by several countries including Brazil, one of the worst coronavirus-hit countries.
Officials said the ICDDR,B is in the process of completing other formalities with the Sinovac and Bangladeshi authorities.
Meanwhile, the first coronavirus case was identified in the country on March 8.
Coronavirus cases in Bangladesh crossed 2 lakh this week, with over 2,500 deaths.
