A delegation from Bangladesh, comprised of representatives from Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), the Ministry of Planning's General Economic Division (GED), officials from the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives (LGRD), and the Ministry of Water Resources, has been invited to attend the UN 2023 Water Conference in New York, which is set to begin on March 22.

The delegation will challenge world leaders to take action on a water-just agenda. Mohammad Zobair Hasan, the deputy executive director of the Development Organization of the Rural Poor (DORP), will be one of the speakers at the conference.

He will be joining a 90-minute session on March 24 at German House, 871 United Nations Plaza, to talk about Water Action and Human Rights, specifically Implementing the Human Rights to Water and Sanitation at the Local Level.

The conference aims to showcase the voices of local government institutions and communities to demonstrate how the human rights to water and sanitation are already being put into practice.

It also seeks to draw lessons from the practical application of these rights at the local level and identify ways national governments and the international community can support their realisation.

The conference will feature a panel of experts who will discuss with the audience what actions can and should be taken to support the realisation of the human rights to water and sanitation at the local level.

The human rights to water and sanitation are essential to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 and are universally recognised by all UN member states.

The Water Conference, co-hosted by the governments of Tajikistan and the Netherlands, will comprise six plenary meetings and five multi-stakeholder interactive dialogues. It will also feature several high-level special events and side events organised by member states, the UN system, and other stakeholders.

The conference outcome will summarise the proceedings and new commitments, pledges, and actions by governments and all stakeholders compiled in the Water Action Agenda towards achieving SDG 6 and other water-related goals and targets.
