Describing the Padma Bridge as a symbol of pride, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday said the international community now shows due respect to Bangladesh as the bridge was constructed with its finances.

"People now show respect when they hear the name of Bangladesh on the international stage. The people of Bangladesh have reached a dignified position," she said while addressing a civic rally as the chief guest marking the closing of the Padma Bridge construction work at Mawa end on Friday afternoon.

She said the mentality about Bangladesh that it can't do anything without their (foreigners) support has changed through the construction of the Padma Bridge with its finance, reports BSS.

"The Padma Bride is a bridge of our pride.... one decision (to build Padma Bridge with our finance) has given Bangladesh dignity. Those who always bossed us and thought that Bangladesh would not move on without them have changed their mentality," she said.

The prime minister recalled the local and international conspiracies to stop the construction of the Padma Bridge.

"We had to build the Padma Bridge overcoming many barriers. We have built the bridge entirely with the money of the people of Bangladesh," she said.

PM pays glowing tributes to Bangabandhu in Tungipara

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday paid rich tributes and offered prayers at the mausoleum of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Tungipara in Gopalganj.

She paid homage by placing a floral wreath at Bangabandhu's grave and joined a prayer this afternoon seeking eternal peace of the departed souls of Bangabandhu and other martyrs of August 15, 1975 carnage.

After laying the wreath, the prime minister stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect to the memory of the architect of independent Bangladesh.

Sheikh Hasina, also president of the Awami League, reached her ancestral home at Tungipara in Gopalganj by road crossing the Padma Bridge this afternoon, reports BSS.

The prime minister earlier on Friday attended a civic rally at Mawa end in Munshiganj, marking the completion of the Padma Bridge construction project.

Since the opening of the Padma Bridge to traffic on 25 June 2022, the Premier has gone to her ancestral home in Tungipara several times crossing the bridge.

The prime minister is scheduled to open "Bangabandhu Corner" at Gimadanga Tungipara Government Model Primary School and unveil the cover of an album titled "Esho Bangabandhuke Jani" (Let's know Bangabandhu) on Saturday morning.

Then the premier will visit Tungipara Multipurpose Poura Super Market.

The premier will leave Tungipara for Dhaka on Saturday afternoon after paying homage to Bangabandhu at his mausoleum.
