Bangladesh-India ink 7 MoUs ahead of Modi-Hasina virtual summit

Bangladesh and India on Thursday inked seven bilateral memoranda of understanding (MoUs) as the virtual summit between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi started around 11:30am.

Sheikh Hasina has joined the summit from her official residence Ganabhaban while Narendra Modi has joined from New Delhi.

The MoUs were signed at the State Guest House Padma around 9am, in presence of Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Vikram Doraiswami and officials of Bangladesh.

Cooperation in the areas of Elephant Preservation/Protection, Sewerage Treatment Plant in Barishal, Community Development Project and Energy Cooperation (Hydrocarbon) are among the deals signed between the two countries.

During the summit, Narendra Modi and Sheikh Hasina are expected to inaugurate the historical Chilahati-Haldibari rail link between both countries, which has now been upgraded.

The rail link that connects Haldibari in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal with Bangladesh’s Chilahati will be one of the key connectivity projects between both countries. It had been made defunct during the 1965 war between India and Pakistan.
