Several activist groups and forums on Thursday organized various programmes in different cities in the country remembering the victims of Mumbai terror attacks of November 26 in 2008.
The day marked the 12th anniversary of the terror attack, which took lives of some 166 people and left hundreds more wounded.
Organizers of the programme also called on the international community, especially Pakistan, to take action against the perpetrators and masterminds of the attack.
Various programmes were organised in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Cumilla, Brahmanbaria and Chattogram. Human chain, discussion programme and cycle rallies were organised to mark the anniversary of Mumbai attacks. Speakers at the programmes expressed their support for the victims and pledged for a united stand against terrorism.
In Dhaka, Bharat-Bangladesh Sampriti Sangsad (BBSS) organized a bicycle rally led by group’s Vice President Zillur Rahman Dulal, General Secretary Taufiq Ahmed Tafsir and Organizing Secretary Zannatul Ferdous.
Bangladesh Conscious Citizen Committee organized a human chain and protest rally in the vicinity of Pakistan High Commission (PHC) at Gulshan Market junction to demand actions against the perpetrators.
At the National Press Club, Dhaka, a human chain-cum-procession was organized by Bangladesh Social Activist Forum. 100 volunteers attended the programme condemning the attacks.
Mukti Joddah Mancha organized a photo exhibition at Raju Memorial Sculpture at Dhaka University. Photos depicting the violent face of terrorism were on display in the exhibition. Apart from the photos of Mumbai attack, terror incidents of August 15, 1975; August 21, 2004 grenade attack and Holey Artisan attack in 2016 were showcased in the exhibition.
In Narayanganj, around 300 people gathered under the banner of “Forum against terrorism and insurgency”. The protesters carried banners and placards against sheltering terrorism by Pakistan.
Similar programmes were organized in Sylhet by Sontrashbad Protirodh Andolon at Court Point.
In Cumilla, Antorjatik Sontrash Birodhi Oikya Forum (ASBOF) organized an open discussion program at Zero Point led by its President Md Borhan Uddin and General Secretary Md. Mizanur Rahman.
In Brahmanbaria, a photo exhibition was organized near Freedom Ground.
In Chattogram, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) organized a public awareness and motorbike rally in protest of terrorism on Kaptai Road. The VHP General Secretary Kapil Krishna Mondal was the keynote speaker on the occasion.
On November 26, 2008, a group of 10 members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, an extremist Islamist organisation based in Pakistan, carried out 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks lasting four days across Mumbai. The attack killed 166 people.
In 2018, former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif suggested that the Pakistani government played a role in the attack.
