Bangladesh recorded 415 new Covid-19 cases, the lowest in almost five months, in a 24-hour period until 8:00am on Saturday.

Earlier on May 16, the country logged 363 new Covid cases.

However, the number of fatalities went up to 20 in the last 24 hours, up from only seven on Friday, which was the lowest in seven months.

The daily infection rate dropped to 2.45 per cent from Friday’s 2.77 per cent.

With this, the daily test positivity rate in the country remained below 5 per cent for more than two weeks.

According to the World Health Organization, if the daily-case positivity rate remains at 5 per cent or below for 14 days, it is considered to be safe for mass unlocking.

The country’s overall caseload now stands at 15,61,878 and the total fatalities at 27,674, according to the press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Health authorities reported the latest figures after testing 16,925 samples at 821 laboratories across the country. Bangladesh has so far tested 99,31,841 samples.

Meanwhile, 543 patients recovered from the deadly infection over the past 24 hours, raising the overall recovery to 15,23,134.

Among the fresh fatalities, 12 were males and eight were females.

Dhaka division logged the highest deaths with nine fatalities, followed by four in Chattogram; three in Rangpur; two in Mymensingh; and one each in Khulna and Barishal.

Rajshahi and Sylhet divisions reported no new deaths.

Bangladesh recorded its first cases on March 8 last year and the first coronavirus-related death on March 18 the same year.
