Bangladesh reported 51 new coronavirus-related deaths, and 1,901 infections in a 24-hour period till 8:00am on Wednesday.
The positivity rate went up slightly to 6.64 per cent from Tuesday's 6.54 per cent.
The overall caseload now stands at 15,36,341 and the total fatalities at 27,058, according to the press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Health authorities reported the latest figures after testing 28,615 samples at 806 laboratories across the country. Bangladesh has so far tested 93,32,460 samples.
Meanwhile, 3,873 patients recovered from the deadly infection in the last 24-hours, raising the overall recovery to 14,90,541.
Among the fresh fatalities, 32 were males and 19 were females.
Dhaka division logged the highest deaths with 20 fatalities, followed by 11 in Chattogram, five each in Khulna and Sylhet, four in Rajshahi and three each in Barishal and Mymensingh.
Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8 last year and the first coronavirus-related death on March 18 the same year.
Students 12 or up to be vaccinated: PM
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said the government has planned to gradually bring students 12 and above under the vaccination coverage.
Hasina said this while replying to a tabled question from Jatiya Party MP Rustam Ali Farazi during PM’s question-answer session in parliament.
The prime minister said the government has a plan to vaccinate 80 per cent of the country’s population.
To bring 50 per cent of people under vaccination coverage by December 2021, the government is taking measures as per the guidelines of the World Health Organization, she told the House.
To make that happen, Hasina said, the government will provide vaccine jabs for the students aged 12 or above.
