IRON, a custom-built solar catamaran boat made in Bangladesh, has won this year's Gustave Trouvé Electric Boat Awards.

The boat, made by Ecomarine BD, was awarded under the Customized/DIY electric boats category, reads a press release.

The first project by Ecomarine, IRON is a 20.5m /67 ft wood fibre composite solar catamaran, which is custom-built with six passenger cabins.

It is used for tourism cruises of flooded river basins in an environmentally sensitive area of the country.

Fully powered by rooftop solar panels and a battery bank, IRON has been designed with an innovative hull to be extremely energy efficient for large clocking speeds of up to 12kmh when using only one of her two 8kW electric motors, the release further says.

The second Gustave Trouvé Electric Boat Awards, hosted by Canadian organisation Plugboat, announced eight winners under eight categories and they came from eight different countries.

The Gustave Trouvé Electric Boat Awards is the world's only electric vessel competition and this time, the competition saw 100 nominees, twice as many as the 2020 awards.
