Bangladesh moves up four notches in Human Development Index

Bangladesh has moved up four notches and ranked 129th out of 191 countries and territories in the latest global human development ratings of the United Nations Development Programme.

According to the Human Development Report 2021/22 published on Thursday, the country made the progress in the Human Development Index (HDI) while it ranked 133rd in the HDI 2020.

Bangladesh’s HDI value for 2021 was 0.661 which put the country in the medium human development category, said the report titled “Uncertain Times, Unsettled Lives: Shaping our Future in a Transforming World”.

According to the report which is published annually since 1990, Bangladesh stood in the fourth position in the South Asian region as Sri Lanka ranked 73rd, Maldives 90th and Bhutan 127th in the index.

India (132), Nepal (143), Pakistan (161) and Afghanistan (180) were ranked behind the country.

Switzerland ranked at the top in the global ranking.

The HDI is a summary measure for assessing long-term progress in three basic dimensions of human development — a long and healthy life, access to knowledge and a decent standard of living.

Between 1990 and 2021, Bangladesh's HDI value changed from 0.397 to 0.661, a change of 66.5 per cent, the report said.

Between 1990 and 2021, Bangladesh's life expectancy at birth changed by 16.4 years, mean years of schooling changed by 4.1 years and expected years of schooling changed by 6.6 years.

The country’s GNI (gross national income) per capita changed by about 252 per cent between 1990 and 2021.
