Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin on Sunday said 113 actions have been identified to deal with 14 types of disasters by dividing Bangladesh into 11 regions under eight sectors in the National Adaptation Plan (NAP).
“Of these, 80 are considered as high priority ones and 23 medium priority actions. To implement the activities identified in the NAP by 2050, we will require about $230 billion,” he said.
The minister revealed the information at a workshop titled “Consultation Workshop on Dissemination and Brainstorming of NAP Implementation” at the auditorium of the Department of Environment (DoE) in Dhaka.
Chaired by Environment Secretary Dr Farhina Ahmed the programme was addressed, among others, by eminent water expert and Professor Emeritus Dr Ainun Nishat, Additional Secretary (Climate Change) of ministry Md Moniruzzaman and DoE Director General Dr Abdul Hamid.
The NAP was presented jointly by Deputy Secretary Dharitri Kumar Sarkar and DoE Director Mirza Shawkat Ali. The high officials, who were present at the workshop, placed their respective suggestions for implementation of NAP.
Speaking as the chief guest, Shahab Uddin said the plan submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on October 31, 2022, is not only a national report but it will also highlight Bangladesh’s position in the global arena in terms of climate adaptation.
“This plan will be implemented by accepting everyone’s valuable opinions. The NAP will be effective in adopting and implementing long-term integrated adaptation activities to address climate change in Bangladesh,” he said.
The minister said the NAP identifies specific adaptation needs for Bangladesh and appropriate strategies to implement those.
In addition to infrastructural development to deal with the adverse impacts of climate change, more emphasis will be given on increasing the adaptive capacity of people living in vulnerable areas, he said.
Shahab Uddin said adaptation activities identified in the NAP will be adopted and implemented through collective efforts to combat climate change.
He said his ministry will continue to make joint efforts with various ministries, organisations and stakeholders to ensure sustainable development in Bangladesh.
