Bangladesh reports record 46 deaths, 3,471 new infections

Bangladesh on Friday reported 46 deaths and 3,471 new positive cases for novel coronavirus over the last 24 hours, both of which are the highest single-day records in the country so far.

The latest figures take the death toll to 1,095 and the total number of infections to 81,523. 

Additional Director General (Admin) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr Nasima Sultana revealed the information at a regular online briefing on Friday afternoon. 

Dr Nasima mentioned that a total of 16,950 samples were collected and 15,990 tested in the last 24 hours. So far, a total of 473,322 samples have been tested in the country.

With 502 new recoveries, a total of 17,249 patients recovered from coronavirus till date.

The deceased, of whom 37 were males and nine females, belonged to the following age groups: one was between 21-30, six between 31-40, three were between 41-50, 12 aged between 51-60, 15 between 61-70, seven between 71-80, one between 81-90 and one was over 100 years old.

Under division-wise categorisation, 19 hailed from the Dhaka division, 11 from Chattogram, five from Rangpur, three each from Barishal and Sylhet, two each from Rajshahi and Mymensingh and one was from the Khulna Division.

Meanwhile, the global death toll from the novel coronavirus infection reached 416,084 as of Thursday morning, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally.

So far, 7,357,011 cases have been confirmed around the world after Covid-19, the disease caused by the new strain of coronavirus, was first reported in China in December last year.

Although cases of new infection keep growing among the infected world population currently, most of them are in mild condition.

Among the currently 3,299,281 infected patients, 3,245,470 are in mild condition, which is 98 percent, Worldometer records in its daily updates. On the other hand, 53,811 of the currently infected patients are in serious condition, and their percentage is only two.

So far, 3,451,664 people have recovered.

32 breathed their last while undergoing treatment at various hospitals while 14 died at home.
