Bangladesh on Tuesday reported 53 deaths and 3,862 new positive cases for novel coronavirus over the last 24 hours, both of which are the highest single-day records in the country so far.
The latest figures take the death toll to 1,262 and the total number of infections to 94,481.
Additional Director General (Admin) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr Nasima Sultana revealed the information at a regular online briefing on Tuesday afternoon.
Dr Nasima mentioned that a total of 18,403 samples were collected and 117,214 tested in the last 24 hours. So far, a total of 533,717 samples have been tested in the country.
With 2,237 new recoveries, a total of 36,264 patients recovered from coronavirus to date.
The deceased, of whom 47 were males and 6 females, belonged to the following age groups: one was between 11-20 years, three between 21-30, two between 31-40, nine were between 41-50 years, 19 aged between 51-60, ten between 61-70, eight between 71-80 and one was between 81-90 years.
Under division-wise categorisation, 30 hailed from the Dhaka division, 14 from Chattogram, four from Rajshahi, three from Khulna and one each from Barishal and Mymensingh divisions.
34 breathed their last while undergoing treatment at various hospitals while 18 died at home. The remaining one was already dead when brought to the hospital.
Meanwhile, the global death toll from the novel coronavirus infection reached 436,322 as of Tuesday morning, according to the data provided by the Johns Hopkins University.
So far, 8,015,053 cases have been confirmed around the world after Covid-19, the disease caused by the new strain of coronavirus, was first reported in China in December last year.
Although cases of new infection keep growing among the infected world population currently, most of them are in mild condition.
Among the currently 3,460,336 infected patients, 3,405,766 are in mild condition, which is 98 percent, Worldometer records in its daily updates. On the other hand, 54,570 of the currently infected patients are in serious condition, and their percentage is only two.
So far, 3,843,751 people have recovered.
