Bangladesh on Wednesday reported 19 deaths and 1,162 new positive cases for novel coronavirus over the last 24 hours, both of which are the highest single-day records in the country so far. The latest figures take the death toll to 269 and the total number of infections to 17,822.
Additional Director General (Admin) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr Nasima Sultana revealed the information at a regular online briefing on Wednesday afternoon.
With new 214 recoveries, a total of 3,361 patients recovered from coronavirus till date.
Dr Nasima mentioned that a total of 7,862 samples were collected and 7,900 tested in the last 24 hours. So far, a total of 1,44,538 samples have been tested in the country.
Among the deceased, 12 were males and 7 females. They belonged to the following age groups: one was aged between 0-10 years, one between 31-40, seven between 51-60, five between 61-70, and five were between 71-80.
Of the 19 deceased, 15 hailed from Dhaka division, three from Chittagong division and one from Khulna division.
Meanwhile, the global death toll from the novel coronavirus infection reached 291,942 as of Wednesday morning, according to the data provided by Johns Hopkins University.
So far, 4,261,747 cases have been confirmed around the world after Covid-19, the disease caused by the new strain of coronavirus, was first reported in China in December last year.
Although cases of new infection keep growing among the infected world population currently, 98 percent are in mild condition.
Of the currently infected 2,447,018 patients, 2,400,676 are in mild condition, which is 98 percent, Worldometer records in its daily updates. 46,342 of the currently infected patients are in serious condition, and their percentage is only two.
So far, 1,493,414 people have recovered.
