Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Tuesday said Bangladesh intensified patrolling by the Border Guard Bangladesh along Bangladesh-Myanmar frontier following internal conflicts in the neighbouring country.

“The government of Myanmar is at war with the Arakan Army and that’s why a few mortar shells landed on the Bangladeshi side from Myanmar recently,” he said.

The minister was speaking to reporters after inaugurating the Rajshahi Police Liberation War Memorial Museum at the Rajshahi Police Lines.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already protested against the incident while the patrol along the border has been strengthened,” Asaduzzaman added.

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen on Sunday said Bangladesh wants to avert any tension along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border through "dialogue and discussion" using the existing mechanism between the BGB and its Myanmar counterpart to resolve any issue quickly if there is any provocation.

"Basically it's an action against their insurgents inside Myanmar. Maybe unintentionally a number of incidents took place. They acknowledged the matter."

Masud said efforts are there so that no tension prevails along the border. "We remain alert highly. The BGB will not allow anyone inside Bangladesh."

Earlier, Bangladesh reiterated her deep concern over falling mortar shells inside Bangladesh territory, indiscriminate aerial firing from Myanmar in the bordering areas, and air space violations from Myanmar.

On September 3, two mortar shells fell inside Bangladesh between border pillars 40 and 41.

Myanmar Ambassador to Bangladesh Aung Kyaw Moe was summoned to the foreign ministry to meet the director general of the Myanmar wing.

During the meeting, the ambassador was also told that such activities are of grave threat to the safety and security of the peace-loving people, a violation of the border agreement between Bangladesh and Myanmar and contrary to the good neighbourly relationship.

The envoy was also asked to come to the ministry on August 21 and August 28 and protest notes were handed over to him conveying Bangladesh’s grave concerns.
