Bangladeshi born American Soma Syed has been elected as Queens county civil court judge in New York State of the United States.

“Tonight, Queens made a history by electing the first Bangladeshi American Judge in Queens and NYS, the newly elected judge said in a Twitter post on Wednesday.

She contested for the post as a Democratic nominee for Queens County Civil Court Judge.

Syed served as an attorney for over 17 years and worked in matters of housing, immigration, and unemployment.

She is also the immediate past president of the Queens County Women’s Bar Association, and chairperson of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) Lawyer Referral and Information Service.

Before receiving her JD from Albany Law School, Syed attended Jamaica High School, and The City College of New York.
