Bangladesh’s regional salience increasing: Speakers

Speakers at a discussion opined that in the coming decade or so, as Bangladesh moves toward becoming a developed country- its salience as a regional economic hub will continue to increase.

They made the remarks at a book discussion session organised by Unnayan Shamannay on Thursday.

The discussants focused on the contents of the recently published book from Bloomsbury Publishing India, titled “Bangladesh A New Journey”.

The session was facilitated at the Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled conference hall at the organisation’s office premises in Dhaka.

Former governor of Bangladesh Bank Atiur Rahman chaired the book discussion session.

The editor of the book and a Professor of O P Jindal Global University, India- Sreeradha Datta was present to present an overview of the issues covered in the book.

Iqbal Singh Sevea (Director, ISAS, National University of Singapore); Delwar Hossain (Professor, International Relations, Dhaka University); and former ambassador Md Abdul Hannan were present as panel discussants.

Sreeradha Datta pointed out that she and the 12 other internationally acclaimed thinkers/analysts have attempted to present the context, prospects and challenges associated with this growing regional salience of Bangladesh.

Atiur Rahman, in his remarks as the Chair inferred that, “Bangladesh’s socioeconomic advancements in the coming decade rely heavily on realisation of the country's potential as a regional economic hub.”

Bangladesh’s importance in the geopolitical context have been increasing in the post-cold war era, and the country's strategic importance to international stakeholders has been being reinforced by its impressive economic performance specially over the last 15 years.
