Dr Rahat Anwar, a renowned physician and founder of Rahat Anwar Hospital in Barishal, died at a hospital in Dhaka early Tuesday.
The 55-year-old had symptoms similar to that of other coronavirus patients.
Confirming the matter, Sharmin Akter Rina, Dr Rahat's wife, said he breathed his last at around 2:30 am at AMZ Hospital in Badda.
Adv Laskar nurul Haque, director of Rahat Anwar Hospital, said Dr Rahat continued treating Covid-19 patients at his hospital since the beginning of the outbreak. He even performed successful surgery on a patient on Sunday. He started to have breathing difficulties on Monday morning.
Two of his hospital’s nurses were infected last week, Haque added.
Adv Haque said Dr Rahat was shifted to Dhaka by air ambulence Monday afternoon as the amount of oxygen in his body fell alarmingly.
"He was admitted to Apollo Hospital in the capital and then taken to AMZ Hospital. He breathed his last there around 2:30am on Tuesday," he said adding that Dr Rahat had symptoms of coronavirus infection.
