A ward councillor has been arrested on charges of raping a woman at Kashimpur in Barishal city.
The arrestee was identified as Azad Hossain Molla Kalam, councillor of Ward 30 at Barishal City Corporation.
Promising to marry the victim, Kalam raped her several times, said Barishal airport police station Officer-in-Charge Kamalesh Chandra Halder.
However, a complaint was lodged on Friday afternoon in this regard, OC Halder said.
Based on complaint, Kalam, also the president of Barishal District Truck Workers Union, was arrested in Bakerganj on Friday evening, said Sub-Inspector Saidul Islam.
Meanwhile, the woman was taken to the One-stop Crisis Centre at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital from the Victim Support Centre of Barishal Metropolitan Police for medical treatment and examination.
