Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and IndustriALL Bangladesh Council (IBC) have urged the government to investigate the death of ready-made garment workers’ leader Shahidul Islam Shahid and bring the criminals to book.
BGMEA and IBC made the call at a meeting held on Tuesday with BGMEA President Faruque Hassan in the chair.
In the meeting, the BGMEA president assured the victim’s family of providing financial assistance. Condemning the brutal killing, he earlier prayed for the salvation of the departed soul and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family.
On the night of June 25, a gang of miscreants attacked Shahidul Islam Shahid, president of Gazipur District Committee of Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation, and two of his co-workers in Shataish Baganbari area of Gazipur.
Shahid was later declared dead on arrival at a local hospital.
His murder immediately sparked workers' protests while the US Solidarity Center and US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas voiced their concern over the killing.
