The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) have sought cooperation from Russia in accessing its domestic market for apparel goods export.

In a meeting on Thursday with Russia Ambassador of to Bangladesh Alexander Vikentyevich Mantytskiy, BGMEA President Faruque Hassan sought cooperation from the Russian government in resolving trade barriers and paving the way to exporting readymade garments and other products to the Russian market.

According to BGMEA, Bangladesh exported to Russia around $594 million apparel goods in FY 2020-21, it was $ 440 million in 2019-20 fiscal year.

Although Bangladeshi RMG goods have huge demand in Russia, tariff complications and barriers in transactions through banking channels have posed an obstruction for trade to flourish.

BGMEA Vice President Miran Ali and First Secretary at the Russian Embassy Anton Vereshchagin were also present on the occasion.

During the meeting, the two sides also discussed various trade related issues, especially how bilateral trade between Bangladesh and Russia could be enhanced further.
