Bhairab rail accident: 7-member probe committee formed

The Ministry of Railways on Tuesday formed a seven-member investigation committee to probe the Bhairab rail accident.

The investigation committee has been ordered to submit its report in seven working days, according to a statement signed by Deputy Secretary of the ministry Towfiq Imam, reports BSS.

Joint Secretary of Railways Ministry Hasan Mahmud will lead the committee as convener while Deputy Secretary Towfiq Imam will be its member secretary, it said.

The committee, comprising representatives of the Railways Ministry and Bangladesh Railway, will investigate the cause of the accident which occurred at Bhairab station when a passenger train "Egarosindhur Express" collided with a freight train there.

Other members of the committee are: Joint Director Generals of Bangladesh Railway MA Salah Uddin and Tabassum Binte Islam, Deputy Secretary of Railways Ministry Mohammad Hanif and Additional Tecom Officer of Bangladesh Railway and Divisional Medical Officer.

Fire Service forms another probe body

A five-member committee was formed to investigate the deadly train accident in Kishoreganj on Monday afternoon that left at least 17 dead and scores injured, reports UNB.

Headed by Lt Col Md Tajul Islam Chowdhury, director (Operations and Maintenance) of the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters, the committee has been asked to submit its report within five working days,  Shahjahan Sikder, deputy assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters media cell, said this morning.

The other members of the committee are: Md Masud Sardar, assistant director of Mymensingh Fire Service (Member Secretary); Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad, deputy director of Narsingdi Fire Service (Member); Md Enamul Haque, deputy director of  Kishoreganj Fire Service (Member); and Md Azizul Haque, station officer, Bhairab Bazar fire service station (Member).

Earlier on Monday night, three separate committees were formed to investigate the train accident.

At least 17 people were dead and several were injured on Monday when a cargo train rammed into two bogies of a passenger train at Bhairab Rail Station in Kishoreganj district on Monday.

The accident occurred at 3:50pm when the cargo train hit the Dhaka-bound Egarosindhur Godhuli Express, coming from Kishoreganj. The passenger train was standing on the outer tracks on its way to Dhaka from the port city of Chottogram.

The rescue operation was declared complete at 3:3am Tuesday after three carriages that overturned in the accident were removed from the line.

3 railway officials suspended

Bangladesh Railway (BR) has suspended three officials in the terrible train accident in Bhairab of Kishoreganj, reports BSS.

These three officials are the Locomaster, Assistant Locomaster and Guard of the freight train.

Divisional Manager (Dhaka Division) of Bangladesh Railway Md Shafiqul Islam told media that the suspended three officials are Locomaster Jahangir Alam, Assistant Locomaster Atiqur Rahman and Guard of the container train Alamgir Hossain.

He said they have taken the steps following preliminary investigation as the officials failure to discharge their duty which resulting an accident that took 17 lives.
