A youth was killed on Monday as shots were fired over a union parishad election in Bhola's Char Fasson area.
The incident took place in front of a polling station in Ward No. 5 of Hazariganj union parishad (UP) around 11:30am on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Monir Hossain, 25.
Locals said Monir was shot when clashes broke out between the supporters of Yasin and Yunus Sikder, councillor candidates of Ward No. 5, over establishing dominance outside the polling station.
Monir was rushed to Char Fasson Hospital where he breathed his last, confirmed Char Fasson Upazila Health Officer Shovon Bashak.
Confirming the matter, Md Kaiser, Superintendent of Police (SP) in Bhola, said the incident took place Monday morning between two councillor candidates during which one was shot dead.
Law enforcers were deployed in the spot to control the situation, he added.
Elections to 204 union parishads and the by-polls to Lakshmipur-2 constituency are being held since Monday morning.
Besides, the municipal elections to Jhalakati Sadar and Setabganj (Dinajpur) are also underway as per the schedule.
The voting started at 8:00am and will continue till 4:00pm without any break.
As many as 173 union parishads have gone to polls in Barishal division, while 13 union parishads in Madaripur district, six each in Gazipur and Lakshmipur, two each in Narsingdi and Sunamganj, and one each in Rangpur and Barguna.
Electronic voting machines (EVM) are being used in the elections to 20 union parishads and Lakshmipur-2 by-polls.
