Bangladesh needs an effective integrated national policy and framework for ensuring chemical safety and security management, said Bangladesh National Authority for Chemical Weapons Convention (BNACWC).

The BNACWC expressed the opinion in its 18th meeting held on a virtual platform Tuesday with its Chairman and Armed Forces Division (AFD) Principal Staff Officer Lieutenant General Waker-Uz-Zaman in the chair.

A total of 43 members from different ministries and organisations participated in the meeting, said a press release.

During the meeting, BNACWC members reviewed the present activities of the organisation and discussed the future road map for implementation of Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) in Bangladesh.

Ever- increasing manufacturing sector led to a significant rise in the chemical demand in Bangladesh, thereby posing increasing risk of chemical incidents and accidents, the members said.

The chairman underscored the importance of capacity building of related responders.

The meeting discussed amending the existing legislation of the country related to management of schedule chemicals for effective implementation of CWC.

BNACWC also discussed the inclusion of 'Chemical Weapons (Prohibition) Act, 2006' under 'Mobile Court Act, 2009' for effective implementation of national legislations related to CWC.

To ensure better management of chemicals in the ports, BNACWC opined for designating few specific ports for import and export of schedule chemicals.
