Just after being announced winner unofficially, BNP-backed councillor candidate Tarikul Islam killed in an attack carried out by his opponents in Sirajganj municipality on Saturday night.
He was stabbed Shahidganj centre after the election results were declared. He was rushed to a private hospital with serious injuries. He died there at 8 pm.
His supporters alleged that Tarikul was stabbed by the supporters of the contesting candidate.
Tensions are running high in the area over the incident. Police patrols have been intensified to keep the situation under control.
Tarikul Islam Khan unofficially won the post of general councillor of ward 6 of the municipality.
