Bogura cop who ‘tortured wife, demanded dowry’ denied bail

A Bogura court on Wednesday rejected the bail petition of a policeman and sent him to prison in a case accusing him of demanding Tk 10 lakh dowry and attempting to murder his wife.

Sub-Inspector Gausul Azam filed a bail petition in the subordinate court after his eight-week bail granted by the High Court expired.

Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir, the judge of Bogura Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2, rejected his bail appeal and sent him to jail pending trial.

According to case documents, on September 22, 2020, Tomania Afrin lodged a case against her husband Azam at Bogura Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2.

The victim claimed that Azam married her on February 11, 2020, concealing information about his first marriage and children. Afrin said she had learned about them two months after their marriage.

SI Azam demanded Tk 10 lakh as dowry on August 17. He tried to strangle his wife, who was into the second month of her pregnancy, to death and at one point of torture she miscarried, according to the victim.
