The Boishommo Birodhi Chhatra Andolon organised an “all-out sit-in” demonstration across the country on Thursday as part of the “Resistance Week” programme, pressing home its four-point demand, including the trial of Sheikh Hasina.

As part of the demonstration, the students started gathering in the city’s Shahbagh area on Thursday around 10 am.

There have been allegations that some demonstrators checked people’s phones and harassed commuters at different areas of the capital. In a message issued the same day, the Boishommo Birodhi Chhatra Andolon clarified its stance on the issue.

Addressing the protesting students, the platform said, “During Thursday's all-out sit-in programme, there have been complaints of harassment by checking people’s phones at different places.

“The Boishommo Birodhi Chhatra Andolon Movement wants to make it clear that we do not condone anything that violates people's privacy. Such actions are reviving old paradigms of discrimination. So do not phone check, or do anything that disrupts the normal course of a citizen's personal life.”

The message adds, “Ensuring personal freedom of people is one of the most important steps for creating a discrimination-free Bangladesh.

“So we call upon everyone to take a peaceful stand to stop the conspirators across the country, and stay on the streets to ensure that normal public life becomes more beautiful and orderly.”
