The National Mourning Day-2023 and 48th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was observed at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) on Tuesday.
Vice-chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Hasibur Rashid, Pro-VC Prof Dr Sarifa Salowa Dina and Treasurer Prof Dr Mojib Uddin Ahamed laid wreaths at the mural of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the campus marking the day.
The VC also paid due homage to all the martyrs including Bangabandhu who were brutally killed on August 15, 1975, and prayed for eternal peace for their departed souls.
Later, different faculties, departments, offices, residential halls, institutes, teachers' associations, officers' associations, employees' unions, Chhatra League and sociocultural organisations of the university placed wreaths there paying rich tributes to Bangabandhu.
Earlier, Prof Dr Hasibur Rashid hoisted the national flag at half-mast and the black flag wore black badges and observed a one-minute silence in honour of all the martyrs of August 15, 1975.
Led by the Vice-chancellor, a mourning process with the participation of the teachers, students, officers and employees of BRUR was brought out on the campus and its adjoining areas.
Recitations from the Holy Quran, milad and doa mehfil were organised at the university's central mosque seeking divine blessings for the eternal peace of departed souls of all the martyrs of August 15, 1975, including Bangabandhu.
Former VC of Rajshahi University Prof Dr Abdul Khaleque participated in a discussion on Bangabandhu virtually as the chief guest with the BRUR VC in the chair.
Pro VC Prof Dina and Treasurer Prof Dr Mojib Uddin Ahamed addressed the discussion as special guests moderated by Associate Prof of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems Umar Farooque.
Convener of the National Mourning Day Celebration Committee-2023 of BRUR Dr Bijan Mohan Chaki, its Member-secretary Md Belal Uddin, President of Begum Rokeya University Teachers' Association Md Shariful Islam, Professor Kamolesh Chandra Roy, Professor Dr Nitai Chandra Ghosh, Director of the Office of the Student Affairs Syed Anwarul Azim, Joint General Secretary of Officers' Association Md Fazlul Haque, among others, spoke at the event.
