BTRC seeks FB, TikTok explanation by Jul 31

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has asked representatives of top social media companies, including Facebook and TikTok, to appear in person in the city’s BTRC Bhaban by Wednesday [July 31], and provide explanations sought by the government.

State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak made the disclosure at a press briefing held in the BTRC on Sunday.

Stating that Facebook, Instagram, TikTok remain banned, the state minister said, “Until they provide explanation sought by the regulatory body BTRC, they will not be able to operate freely in this country. The government will remain steadfast in its decision.

“Facebook is promoting content which is supposed to be automatically blocked according to their policy. No action was taken against such content. We have sought an explanation on why they did not take action in this regard.”

Information and Communication Technology Division Secretary Md Shamsul Arefin, BTRC Chairman Engineer Mohiuddin Ahmed, and other officials of the regulatory body were present at the press brief.
