BUP holds human chain, silent march in solidarity

Faculty members of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) gathered at the Mirpur DOHS gate for a peaceful human chain in support of the constitution and human rights. The participants marched in silence from the DOHS gate to Sagufta on Saturday.

This peaceful demonstration was held in response to the ongoing nationwide repression, killings, harassment, and arrests of students, teachers and the general public, read a press release.

Faculty members of BUP addressed the gathering, strongly condemning these incidents and demanding the immediate release of all detained students, including those from BUP.

On the previous day, August 2, 2024, a statement signed by approximately 200 BUP faculty members was released. In the statement, they expressed their concerns and called for an end to the injustices faced by students, teachers and citizens across the country.

The release read, “We, the hereinafter named faculty members of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), in our personal capacity extend solidarity to the rightful demands of the students of Bangladesh.

“We strongly condemn the indiscriminate and unlawful use of force on the peaceful protest of the students and demand transparent and fair investigation of the tragic death incident of our beloved student Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho (MBA Professional- 36 Batch) and all other deceased as well as wounded citizens of the nation.”

It further mentioned, “We also call for the immediate release of our students, namely, Waqiur Rahman Shawon (Finance and Banking-07 Batch) and Nazmul Rahman Khan Rayhan (MBA Professional- 35 Batch), and all other students who have been detained or arrested arbitrarily.

“We further demand for the removal of any present or future threat of persecution and oppression against the students.”

The release added, “We unequivocally state that we stand with our students in all lawful and just causes to uphold their constitutional and universal human rights. Any of our former or current students can reach out to us for any sort of assistance or support.”
