Bus owners have decided to allow half fare for the students while riding public transports in the Dhaka metropolitan area.

Khandaker Enayetullah, general secretary of Dhaka Road Transport Owners' Association, made the disclosure at a press briefing on Tuesday.

“The half fare will come into effect from Wednesday,” he said.

The decision comes at a time when students took to the streets to realise their demands, including half fare and road safety.

Demonstrators, however, blocked the Rampura road on Tuesday protesting another death of a student in a road accident in the area on Monday night.

At the briefing, Enayetullah said students must carry and display valid identity cards with photographs issued by their respective educational institutions while travelling.

They will be able to enjoy the facility from 7:00am to 8:00pm, he said.

However, the facility will not be applicable on the day of closure of educational institutions, government and weekly holidays, he added.

On November 3, the government raised the prices of diesel and kerosene by Tk 15 per litre.

Following that, it increased fares of intra-city and inter-district buses by 26.5 per cent and 27 per cent respectively amid the pressure created by transport owners.

Later, students from different educational institutions started demonstrating on the city streets demanding half fare in public transports.
