Buses start carrying 50% passengers

Passengers are undergoing immense sufferings from Wednesday morning as public transports are barred from carrying more than fifty percent passengers of their capacity in Dhaka to contain the spread of Covid-19.

Commuters, mostly office goers, were seen waiting in bus stops in the capital for hours. Many of them started walking under the scorching sun towards offices failing to grab a bus.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday said all the public transport would run with 50 percent fewer passengers than capacity from March 31 in order to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier on May 31, 2020, the government raised the fares of inter-district and long-haul (Dhaka, Chittagong cities and adjoining areas) buses and minibuses by 60 per cent in order to compensate bus owners carrying 50 per cent fewer passengers to prevent the transmission of Coronavirus.
