The Chattogram chapter of Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) has demanded action against those involved in egg market manipulation.
In a press statement on Monday, CAB leaders protested the decision of the Chattogram Egg Traders Cooperative Association to stop selling eggs for an indefinite period against the backdrop of the drives conducted by the Directorate of National Consumers Right Protection (DNCRP) and the district administration.
They said the traders’ syndicates have been destabilising the egg market, creating an artificial crisis though there is no supply crunch.
As the DNCRP and the district administration conducted drives at Pahartali Bazar and fined traders for irregularities, the traders decided to stop selling eggs dubbing the drives harassment, read the statement.
The CAB leaders urged the authorities concerned to ban the activities of the Egg Traders Cooperative Association and shut down the shops of its members.
If necessary, they demanded masterminds of the syndicate be brought to book under the Special Powers Act.
