The Cabinet Committee on Law and Order on Wednesday raised concerns over commodity prices and asked the government agencies to monitor the market situation effectively, said the committee's chairman and Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque.

"We have raised concerns over a specific matter, and that is commodity prices. Certain government decisions related to controlling commodity prices have not been implemented effectively,” he said.

Wednesday’s concerns came in the 12th meeting of the committee. The meeting was held in the conference room of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

"For proper control, the government has directed its relevant agencies to monitor the situation and take necessary measures,” the minister said.

He said they are concerned.

“Those who produce locally, such as farmers, do not receive the expected price, but the middlemen do. The consumers also do not receive the benefit of the price control when they purchase products,” he said.

The minister said there is a major gap between the prices set by the producers and the retailers.

"The law says the measures have to be taken against hoarders. The law allows for appropriate enforcement, ensuring that they operate within the law," the minister added.

The concerns raised by the Cabinet Committee highlight the ongoing challenges faced by the government in regulating and stabilising commodity prices in the market, with a focus on benefiting both producers and consumers.

Monitoring and enforcement of the relevant regulations will be crucial to addressing the matter effectively, the minister said.
