Car servicing centre fire guts vehicles, restaurant in Rajshahi

A fire started at a car servicing centre in Rajshahi city's Varendra College area on Friday and quickly spread to a nearby 10-storey building, the fire service said.

The blaze gutted a restaurant on the second floor of the building and five cars at the servicing centre.

One resident of the building was sent to the hospital as he fell sick after inhaling smoke.

Rafiqul Islam, assistant director of the Fire Service and Civil Defence Rajshahi, said the fire originated from the servicing centre and engulfed the building around 4:00am.

"On information, 12 firefighting units responded to the fire at 4:20am and the responders could tame the flames after two hours. However, the extent of damage could not be confirmed immediately," he added.
