Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has decided to resign.

Speaking to reporters at the Election Commission (EC) Secretariat on Wednesday, Awal said, “I will hold a press conference in this regard at 12pm on Thursday, and disclose further details on the matter then.

When asked when he will meet the president, the CEC said, “I will meet the president tomorrow [Thursday] as well.”

Back on August 24, Qazi Habibul Awal wrote a column titled “Reform-Revolution and Decree: Government and Constitution” in a national daily. In that column, he claims to have found no one for holding discussions.

Awal further claimed that after the fall of the Awami League government the way this interim government is operating without suspending the constitution, the Election Commission will face into a constitutional crisis due to its obligation to organise national polls

Under such circumstances, Awal called for the suspension of the constitution in whole or in part by issuing a civil order to “advance the objectives of the revolution.”
