A car driver and four of its passengers of a family miraculously escaped death after a container lorry crushed the vehicle on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway at Faujdarhat on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred around 10:30am near Faujdarhat Cadet College.

The passengers are – Abu Bakkar, 42, an expatriate, his father Musa Ahmed, 63, and Abu Bakkar’s daughters Abida Akter, 6, and Abila Akter, 3, – all from Fatikchhari. The car driver was Belal, 32. All of them sustained minor injuries.

Locals said Abu Bakkar returned home from abroad Saturday and his two daughters along with their grandfather went to Chattogram airport to receive him.

On their way home, when they reached Faujdarhat Cadet College, a student suddenly attempted to cross the road forcing Belal to stop the car immediately.

The container-carrying lorry was coming behind the car and its driver also braked sharply and the container fell on the car.

“Upon receiving the information, Kumira Fire Service personnel rushed to the spot and rescued four passengers and the driver,” Agrabad Fire Service Assistant Director Abdul Razzak told The Business Post.

“Due to the braking impact, the container lorry hit the median and its rear overturned on the car and smashed it, trapping the five for around half an hour inside the vehicle,” he said.

Two cranes were used to remove the container lorry, the fire service official added.

Baro Auliya highway police Officer-in-Charge Belal Uddin Jahangir said five of them were fortunate to survive the accident. The car and the lorry have been seized.
