A Dhaka court on Sunday framed charges against former national team cricketer Al-Amin Hossain in a case filed over torturing his wife for dowry.

Judge Mafroja Parveen of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8 indicted Al-Amin rejecting his discharge petition in the case.

The tribunal also set April 9 for recording testimonies of witnesses in the case.

During the court proceedings, the special public prosecutor read out the charges and asked the accused whether he is guilty or not. Al-Amin pleaded not guilty and sought justice.

The tribunal also issued a show-cause notice to the cricketer, asking him to explain by April 9 why his bail would not be cancelled in the case.

The order came after his wife Ishrat Jahan submitted an application, seeking cancellation of his bail on grounds that Al-Amin had repeatedly been putting pressure on her to withdraw the case.

On February 2, the police submitted a charge sheet against Al-Amin.

On September 1 last year, Ishrat filed a complaint with Mirpur model police station against Al-Amin over torturing her for dowry. Later, the police registered a case.

According to the case statement, the cricketer demanded Tk 20 lakh as dowry from his wife and used to beat her as she refused to pay the amount.

He also drove her out of the house with their two sons on August 25.

On that day, Al-Amin also assaulted Ishrat and threatened to divorce her. He also filed a false case against her. Ishrat’s uncle took her to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital for treatment, read the case statement.

A day after lodging the complaint on September 1, Ishrat also filed another case against Al-Amin with a Dhaka court under the Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Act, 2010, seeking financial aid of Tk 1 lakh per month for the maintenance of their children.
