Chattogram flood damages 50,000 hectares of cropland

The monsoon flood triggered by heavy rainfall, and increased water flow from upstream, has caused extensive damage to the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in Chattogram region.

The Incessant rainfalls have led to the damage of diverse croplands across five districts in the Chattogram region, causing harm to a total area of 50,818 hectares. The Agricultural Extension Department has attributed this extensive damage to the combined effects of heavy rainfall and landslides.

The damage in the Chattogram region, spanning Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Feni, and Lakshmipur districts, reveals an extensive toll of 50,818 hectares of land. This comprises--8,462 hectares of Aush paddy fields, 6,448 hectares of Aman seedbed, 29,193 hectares of Aman paddy field, 6,250 hectares of autumn vegetable land, and 565 hectares of summer vegetable cultivation land that have all suffered significant harm.

Among the agricultural areas of these five districts, the croplands of Chattogram district have been affected the most. Heavy rains in all the upazilas have damaged 6,567 hectares of Aush paddy, 3,846 hectares of Aman seedbed, 15,330 hectares land of Aman crops and 6,815 hectares land of autumn vegetables. A total of 30,810 hectares i.e. 47.84 per cent of the crops in Chattogram district have been damaged.

Besides, in Cox’s Bazar district, 1,545 hectares of Aush paddy land, 1,992 hectares of Aman seedbed, 10,718 hectares of Aman plantation, 873 hectares of autumn vegetables’ land and 510 hectares of summer vegetables have been damaged. A total of 15,638 hectares of land or 23.80 per cent of the total damages are in Cox’s Bazar.

850 hectare croplands have been damaged in Feni district. Out of this, 10 hectares of Aman seedbed, 825 hectare lands of Aman plantation and 15 hectare lands of autumn vegetables were damaged. In Lakshmipur district, 3,520 hectares of land has been damaged by heavy rains. Out of this, Aush 250 hectares of land, 600 hectares of Aman seedbed, 2,320 hectare lands of Aman paddy, 295 hectare lands of autumn vegetables and 55 hectare summer croplands have been damaged.

Speaking to The Business Post, Additional Director of Chattogram Agricultural Extension Department Dr. Arabinda Kumar Roy said, “50,818 hectares of various croplands have been damaged due to heavy rains in Chattogram region. Work is going on to collect the exact damage information of many upazilas. The final damage amount will be assessed when weather conditions normalize.”

However, these five districts of Chattogram agricultural region currently have 3,05,592 hectares of cultivated land.

Out of this, Aush 81,753 hectares, Aman seedbeds 23,231 hectares, Aman 1,84,359 hectares, autumn vegetables land 13,849 hectares, summer vegetables’ land  2,400 hectares. Among them, the total amount of cultivated lands in Chattogram district are 96,198 hectares, 29,701 hectares in Cox’s Bazar district, 1,08,541 hectares in Noakhali, 42,299 hectares in Feni and 28,853 hectares in Lakshmipur.

Mentionable, there was no damage of croplands in Noakhali district.
